Wildlife of C&O Canal National Historical Park

I have continued to explore the environs of the C&O Canal National Historical Park on my morning walks.  I have been as far out as Sycamore Landing and milepost 27, although most of my walks are closer to home.  I never imagined I would make these photographs of birds and other creatures.  I’m happy that I can share them with you here.

Oh deer.

I spotted lots of deer out around Great Falls this morning.  One doe was unfazed by my approach and continued eating as I got within 50 feet.  A trio on the C&O canal were more wary and finally crossed the canal at a shallow spot before I could get too close.

Gone to the birds

My friend Jeff Snyder says I’ve got the “bird bug,” and he’s right.  I’ve been taking lots of bird photographs on my morning nature walks and posting them to Instagram and Facebook.  Check out the gallery below.

4th of July Fireworks

Fireworks at Iwo Jima Memorial

On the 4th of July I photographed Washington, D.C.’s fireworks at the Iwo Jima Memorial.  I have shot fireworks from this angle before but not in over 20 years.  This was a rough year for fireworks photography.  Around 5 pm a storm hit and police cleared out the grounds at the Memorial.  I was finally allowed in at 6 pm and set up my tripod in my favored spot.  The rain did not return but low clouds lingered and the air was heavy and damp.  There was very little breeze and smoke from the fireworks built up obscuring the view from my vantage.  But ultimately patience paid off and I made one nice frame.  When I got home I posted on Instagram and Facebook and it was well received by friends and colleagues.  CLICK ON THE PHOTO FOR A LARGER VERSION.
